How APIs and Digital Services can Jumpstart Digital Transformation

XapiX.io CEO Christian Umbach spoke to business leaders at the German Trade Congress 2017 in Berlin on the influence of APIs and digital services on digital transformation processes—and how companies like XapiX.io take part in this transformation of industries and markets.

For enterprises in the consumer goods industries, it would be the ultimate dream to make their merchandise available to every customer within 90 minutes. Scalable solutions related to digital business models would enable even local retailers to have a stand against the competition from the likes of Amazon & Co. Yet, the reality is that delivery trajectories in the 90 minute timeframe seems unthinkable to many practitioners and managers in the retail field.

Another reality is that a lot of processes that are related to the integration of existing services and offerings with new concepts, ideas, and applications are being executed largely "by hand"—meaning that enterprises have to spend significant amounts of resources like time and money for digital integration projects. At XapiX, we think this should be different. We believe that the future of digital integration projects lies in stakeholders being able to foster relationships with new partners, thus enabling the introduction of new services. The actual integration processes can be handled by machines under the management of developers in the respective companies. This way, integrations could be automated by leveraging the power of APIs and digital services.

Looking at the example of retail logistics startup Liefery helps to understand this impact better (see image above). Liefery is a company that offers the delivery of parcels in specific timeframes—most commonly same or next day. Data regarding the individual shipments as well as the integration of the service with third-party online shops is being handled through an API, ideally. In this context, automated processes can significantly increase the number of possible shipments per week by decreasing IT integration time. While enterprises either often times vouch for manual, CSV-file data exchanges at first, this limits the ability of shipments heavily as all data has to be manually checked by humans. Fully integrating the Liefery API in a custom way in the backend of the supplier is a custom, lengthy process that is taking up to a year due to the IT complexity of the retailer’s systems. Those retailers which have API solutions in place have a critical competitive advantage, they can start and seamlessly quickly scale up within days.
